Layered Drink Recipe With Grenadine for Kids Skip

Why should kids miss out on all the fun of fancy cocktails that parents enjoy just because they need theirs to be alcohol free and G-rated? There are several different fancy-looking drinks that parents can make for their kids’ parties or special occasions like New Year’s Eve. Grenadine is perfect for making layered drinks, as the bright red color stands out in drinks and its syrupy texture ensures that it doesn’t dissipate easily if you don’t want it to.

Grenadine Syrup

For layered drinks, it works best if you put the grenadine in first, before the juice and/or soda. If you will be using ice in the drink, put that in the cup first, then pour the desired amount of grenadine in on top of the ice. Otherwise, pour 1 to 2 tablespoons of the grenadine syrup into the bottom of the cup.


Pour about 2 ounces of juice on top of the grenadine syrup. Any type of yellow or orange juice will work fine, such as pineapple juice, orange juice or lemonade. Orange juice seems to blend the nicest with grenadine, but use your own judgment.


For the top layer of your mocktail, add an ounce or so of your favorite clear soda or club soda. Lemon lime soda works well for this, but if you’re trying to make it a little less sweet, a small amount of club soda or carbonated water will also make a pretty and tasty drink.


For older preschoolers who can handle smaller pieces of fruit, garnish the layered drink with a maraschino cherry or a slice of lime. Make sure your tot drinks in front of you, however, just to be on the safe side and prevent a choking risk. Before you shudder at how sugary this drink is, remember, this is a mock cocktail for special occasions, not a normal drink to have with toast every morning.

Things to Consider

If you’re making this drink for a 2-year old, consider putting it in a clear sippy cup so that the colors really shine through. For an older toddler or preschooler, a clear plastic cup will work nicely. It’s sticky, though, so having your child enjoy her fancy drink at the dining room table might be helpful for your sanity later, when you’re not spending your evening crying and trying to scrub red syrup out of your tan couch cushions.
