How to Encourage Preschoolers to Maintain Their Health

You love your little one and would do anything to protect her, so why not teach your preschooler how to have and maintain great health for the rest of her life? It is easy to whip up a lunch for your preschooler from packaged foods and let her sit in front of kids’ movies all day, but is that really going to help her stay healthy? Probably not. Instead, teach your child about health and wellness with a few books designed to teach kids about health.

Puppet Show

Although you can just read a book to your child to teach her about ways to stay healthy, you can make the story time even more exciting and interesting by combining it with a puppet show. Choose finger puppets if you still want to be able to turn the pages of your book, or use full hand puppets if you have a page-turning volunteer. Look for health-related books with whimsical characters similar to the puppets that you have so that you can make the puppets act out scenes from the story. If you choose to read ” Joey the Kangaroo: An Adventure in Exercise” by Len Saunders, pick out a kangaroo hand puppet. If you choose “Oh the Things You Can Do That Are Good for You!: All About Staying Healthy” by Tish Rabe, use a Cat in the Hat puppet.

Interactive Story Time

Make story time more interactive with your preschoolers by stopping the story periodically to do a few healthy exercises. Some books even work this type of activity into the story. Read your little ones the book “My Amazing Body: A First Look at Health and Fitness” by Pat Thomas, and pause to do some of the exercises and activities listed in the book. All of these activities are easy for toddlers and preschoolers to do, as well as their mommies, like touching the floor, jumping around the room like a bunny rabbit or playing follow the leader.

Healthy Foods Activity

Staying healthy is not all about exercise. Choosing and eating the right foods can be just as important, posing a challenge for kids who love the taste of sweet foods. Let’s face it, this can sometimes be difficult for mommies, too! Combine story time with a healthy foods activity to help your child learn about healthy foods. Read a story book about preparing healthy foods, such as “Good Enough to Eat: A Kid’s Guide to Food and Nutrition” by Lizzy Rockwell. Then, prepare some of the meals and snacks listed in the book, like spaghetti with salad. Talk about the information you read as you make the meal with your children so that they know what makes certain foods healthy, but not others.

Healthy Body Crafts

Kids learn quickly when it involves a craft, so why not combine a little healthy reading with a health-related craft project? Read a crafty health book like “Janice VanCleave’s The Human Body for Every Kid: Easy Activities that Make Learning Science Fun” by Janice Pratt VanCleave, then set up a craft activity from the book. Choose a craft that your little ones can easily accomplish, like cutting out pictures of health foods or people doing healthy activities, then pasting them on to a sheet of construction paper to show how to stay in good health.
