San Rafael, California, is in the San Francisco Bay Area and is home to nearly 60,000 residents. Families living in San Rafael or the surrounding areas will find many activities for their toddlers. You won’t have to drive far to find something fun to do, even on a Sunday.
WildCare (Wildcarebayarea) is an urban wildlife rehabilitation facility in downtown San Rafael. This organization not only treats sick and injured animals, but also works to teach people about living peacefully with the wildlife in the area. WildCare family adventures encourage families to enjoy nature through a free program at various locations.
At the WildCare courtyard, daily presentations are made where you can view native animals up close. Tours of the WildCare center are also available, so you and your toddler can take a look at native mammals, birds and reptiles.
San Rafael Public Library
Spend a rainy Sunday afternoon with your toddler at the San Rafael public library (Srpubliclibrary.org). Story times for babies to preschoolers are offered at scheduled days and times at this branch. Special events are also often offered, such as R.E.A.D. with Bumps. On select Sunday afternoons, children and parents can read to therapy and assistance dogs.
When these activities and events are not available, moms can still visit the library and snuggle up with their toddler in the children’s section to read some stories together.
Doodlebug (Doodlebugmarin.com), just five minutes away in San Anselmo, is open seven days a week. At the Doodlebug art studio, moms can take her toddler for a day of art projects and activities. You can paint wooden items or pottery or choose one of the other projects like making a mosaic.
Private parties for children are available for birthdays or a fun day with friends. Classes and events are also scheduled for various days of the week.
China Camp State Park
China Camp State Park (Parks.ca.gov) is a 15-minute drive away. China Camp was once a fishing village but has since been turned into a 1,500-acre state park. Take your toddler for a Sunday hike on the trails that wind through the forest and grassland.
Enjoy the views of the waterfront, while seeing whether you can spot any wildlife such as deer, coyotes, foxes and birds that make this park their home. Let your toddler experience the thrill of fishing or go for a swim together.
