How to Use Surf Board Crafts for Preschoolers

As the summer approaches or when you just need a sunny craft pick-me-up, consider a tropical theme for your kid’s craft projects. Letting your preschooler make some surf board crafts not only gives him an afternoon distraction, it also gives you an excuse to grab your coconuts and a hula skirt.

Catch Some Waves

Cut a flattened cardboard box into a surf board at least 3 feet long and 2 feet wide. Grab some markers and let your preschooler draw some surfer dude stuff on the cardboard, like waves or the sun. Once the surf board is decorated, throw on some surfing music and flowery shorts, let him stand on the surfboard and pretend to catch some waves.

Surf Board Keychain

Shrink paper never fails to impress preschoolers, and maybe even some adults. Grab a sheet of shrink paper and cut it into a surf board shape. Since the paper shrinks considerably when you bake it, about a 50 percent reduction, cut it into a surfboard shape at least 6 inches by 3 inches. Punch a hole into one end of the surf board. Hand over a permanent marker and let your preschooler draw some designs on the shrink paper.

You should protect your table with newspaper so you don’t have a new tropical surfer theme imprinted on it. Preheat the oven according to the shrink paper instructions, as temperatures for individual products can vary. Place the shrink paper on a metal baking sheet with the decorated side up and place it in the oven. It will bend and wrinkle and then straighten out again.

Remove the surf board from the oven with oven mitts after the shrink paper stops shrinking or according to product instructions. Allow it to cool down for at least five minutes before handling it. Loop a key chain ring through the hole and you’ve got yourself a surf board key chain.

Surf Board Art

Cut a piece of construction paper into a surf board shape. Spread some newspaper on the table and put an old shirt on your little surfer. Pour some tempera paints on a few paper plates and allow him to sponge paint or finger paint the surfboard to his little heart’s desire. Hose him down afterwards and let the new masterpiece dry before hanging it proudly on the fridge.

Surfing Bottle

Fill an empty soda bottle three-fourths full of water and the rest with mineral oil. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the liquid. Cut a small surf board shape out of a foam craft sheet and put it into the bottle. It should be small enough to fit through the bottle lid. Tighten the lid onto the bottle and seal it up tight with a hot glue gun.

Once the hot glue has cooled completely, let your preschooler rock the bottle back and forth as he watches the surf board catch some waves. This is much cleaner than taking him to the sandy beach for a surf lesson.
