How to share Songs About Raising Boys – PreschoolerSkip

Having a little boy in your life might get more dirty and loud than you expected. You might have to tell your son to stop jumping off the back of the couch one time too often and anchor your furniture to the wall for his own protection. Along with the chaos, there is a sweetness to little boys that is best captured in song. When your toddler terror is making you pull your hair out, slip on some headphones and load your personal music player with these tunes, and you will soon “Thank heaven for little boys.

”Puff the Magic Dragon – Peter, Paul & Mary

For a good look at the imagination of a little boy, sing along as little Jackie Paper romps with an imaginary friend in Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Puff the Magic Dragon.” Released in 1963, this song is a perennial favorite with several children’s books published since the song release using the iconic lyrics. In the end, little Jackie Paper outgrows his dragon friend, a reminder of the fleeting nature of childhood. The song takes a downturn, slowing in its magical rhythm at, “A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys,” sending mothers of sons running to hug their still little boys.

Beautiful Boy – John Lennon

“Beautiful Boy” is another classic song written by one of the most famous musicians in history to his own son, Sean, born in 1975. The song is both a soothing bedtime story promising to chase away the monsters and a father’s joy at watching his son grow. He proclaims it will get better and better, and in the meantime, hold my hand. It is representative of the feelings of many parents when looking at their children, imagining a better future for them, proclaiming how beautiful they are, and urging them to hold our hands to help guide them along their paths.

St. Judy’s Comet – Paul Simon

For the little boy who won’t fall asleep, “St. Judy’s Comet” by Paul Simon is a good choice for calming both parent and child. Simon’s soothing voice croons about a little boy who won’t close his eyes and a sparkle of diamonds in the wake of a comet. Originally released on side two of Paul Simon’s 1973 album titled, “There Goes Rhymin’ Simon,” this song was overshadowed by hits on the same album: “Kodachrome,” “Something So Right,” and “Loves Me Like a Rock.

“Cat’s in the Cradle – Harry Chapin

Harry Chapin writes a tear-jerking song about a father having little time for his son in “Cat’s in the Cradle,” released in 1974. The father brushes off his son’s pleas to play for another time, when he isn’t so busy, not realizing his son was growing up in the process. The son turns the tables, having no time for his father because he is too busy. This song is a good reminder to parents to slow down and enjoy their children while they are still small.
